Mindset
Your mindset is your number one tool in real estate.
"Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right." - Henry Ford
Your mentality will determine whether you can adapt and thrive in this ever-changing work environment. You have a unique opportunity to grow and learn a lot about yourself, your relationships, and what you need to do to turn knowledge into income.
Your mindset is influenced by past experiences and your perception of reality, but let’s start fresh. No one knows who you were before you started in real estate, and it doesn’t matter. Wear your new role proudly. Real estate is one of the best professions in the world! Did you know that more billionaires were made from real estate in 2022 than in any other industry?**
We are in an incredible service-based industry. At a real estate conference I attended, Gene Rivers, a prominent agent in Florida, said, “We don’t make anything.” As real estate agents, we don’t manufacture products—yet every day, the “store shelves” are stocked with new inventory (listings). We get to sell that inventory to our friends, family, and clients, and we’re paid handsomely for doing so. The more you sell, the more you earn—there’s no salary cap. Plus, you make your own hours. Sounds too good to be true, right?
Well, what’s the barrier to entry? Surprisingly, it’s low. In most states, you don’t even need a degree. All you have to do is take three online or in-person classes, pass them, and study for a 100-question exam.
Which you already passed! You’re already ahead of many who just aspire. Now let’s focus on getting you selling homes and on the path to greatness.
Affirmations
You are in a great industry! Stay positive and remind yourself of that, especially when things get tough. I do it, too. If anyone brings negativity into your life or tells you that you can’t do something, simply say, “Let’s keep things positive.” Keeping your mind in a joyful and hopeful space is crucial to your success.
One effective way to maintain a positive mindset is by incorporating affirmations into your daily routine. Affirmations are powerful statements that align your thoughts with your actions. For example, one affirmation we used at Keller Williams conventions was:
"I AM A GREAT SALES PERSON."
You would repeat it three times:
-
“I AM A GREAT SALES PERSON.”
-
“I AM A GREAT SALES PERSON.”
-
“I AM A GREAT SALES PERSON.”
Your affirmations don’t have to be robotic or lengthy. Simple phrases like “I got this,” or “I’m going to do great” can work wonders. Say them aloud or write them down to deeply embed them in your subconscious. When negative thoughts creep in, drown them out with positivity.
Master Your Feelings
In real estate, you’ll become a jack-of-all-trades. You’ll need to excel in some areas while improving others. To be most effective, you must first master your feelings. This includes:
-
How you talk about yourself: Speak positively about your life and work. Use phrases like, “I’m grateful I get to…” or “I’m happy to be doing…” Clients want to work with positive people, and you’ll attract like-minded individuals.
-
How you treat yourself: Exercise regularly. This industry requires physical and mental stamina. Aim for 3-6 physical activities weekly, and focus on eating healthy—balanced meals with protein, vegetables, and limited carbs. You are your business, and your health directly impacts your success.
-
How you treat others: Real estate is a social business. Treat peers, clients, and colleagues with respect. Even if another agent is difficult, maintain professionalism. You never know who you’ll work with again or who can influence your success.
Mastering your feelings also includes setting personal goals like meal prepping, following a sleep schedule, and staying disciplined in your habits.
